Ian Hartley :: Counselling Psychologist Based in Parkhurst, Johannesburg (Gauteng)

Based in Parkhurst, Johannesburg (Gauteng)

Ian Hartley is a Counselling Psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), and completed his training at the University of Pretoria where he obtained a Masters Degree in Psychology and he works both in private practice in Johannesburg as well as at Evexia Psychiatric Day Hospital in Midstream.

He believes that each individual possesses a unique belief system that they use to navigate their way through life. Past experiences and traumas have a significant impact on us and can cause us severe distress. By engaging with these past traumas, we can learn to become more aware of and accepting of ourselves. We can learn to express our needs and find out what is best for us, because when we experience challenges our belief systems and thought patterns play a significant role in how we manage and react to these difficulties.

There are times when our conditioned approaches and ways of dealing with difficulties prove ineffective which may cause us to feel stuck or perhaps with the perceived inability to take control over certain aspects of our lives, however It is during these times people have the capacity to call on resilience factors, coping mechanisms and strategies they weren’t aware of or had been unable to access previously.

Insight and perception are incredible human qualities that allow us to learn to manage and still thrive in the presence of life’s challenges. Exploring alternative possibilities and ways of thinking through increasing self-awareness in times of struggle empowers us and embeds a newfound sense of confidence, worth and self-acceptance.

Ian has experience working with adolescents, adults and couples across private practice and inpatient settings where he consults with people individually and in group settings. He is passionate about assisting others understand their emotions, become more self-aware and continue to grow through their challenges and adversity. Ultimately his goal is to ease suffering through helping others become more accepting of themselves and to discover their needs and how to meet them.
